No-exam life insurance

Which applicants qualify for faster underwriting, the process for those who do, and your options if you don't.

Today's carriers frequently provide accelerated underwriting: for applicants who are young enough and requesting modest coverage, they render a decision from your application, pharmacy records, driving history, and other public data, bypassing the need for a physical exam. A handful of decisions arrive within hours. Every quote on this page indicates whether an exam is expected, might be needed, or is not necessary.

What it changes

Accelerated underwriting is not the same as skipping review. The carrier verifies your answers, and any policy issued based on false information can be disputed for two years. If the carrier's database check flags concerns, an exam or blood work may still be requested; you can choose whether to proceed.

Who tends to qualify

Most carriers use accelerated underwriting for applicants under about 60, requesting modest coverage amounts, with no serious health issues and no nicotine use for at least a year. Several carriers will substitute recent lab results from a doctor's visit instead of ordering their own exam.

Should an exam be required, it typically takes 20 to 30 minutes and happens at your residence or workplace by a paramedical technician at no charge. For healthy applicants, the exam outcomes frequently raise the rate class, so it is not automatically a negative outcome.
