Guide
How much life insurance do you need?
A simple estimator and the logic supporting it: the income years you need to replace, your outstanding debts, education funding goals, and the protection you already own.
A straightforward approach: estimate the total income-dependent needs (mortgage, schooling, living expenses) for the years ahead and deduct what you already have saved or in group coverage. The figure does not need to be exact—term coverage is purchased in $50,000 increments, and the goal is sufficiency, not precision, for the critical years.
Coverage estimate
Try this rough formula: (annual income × years needed) + current debts + education savings goals − existing coverage, then round to the nearest $5,000. This is a starting framework, not personalized guidance.
Why those inputs
Income years. Planners typically suggest ten to twenty years of income replacement, depending on how long dependents will require support. Families with young children in Orange County frequently select the longer span because the combined cost of housing, childcare, and school fees reaches its peak during that same window.
Debts. For most families in Lake Forest, the mortgage is the principal financial obligation. A coverage amount sufficient to pay it off preserves the family home and keeps survivors' options open rather than forcing an immediate relocation.
Education. Set aside a ballpark figure per child in current-year dollars for college or vocational training. Including it in your initial coverage is simpler than purchasing an additional policy afterward.
What you have. Include accessible savings and any group term coverage you receive through your employer. Keep in mind that group coverage typically terminates when employment ends, so some people count only a fraction of it.
After you settle on a target amount, the quote tool demonstrates the cost from each carrier across 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30-year terms. Many people select coverage slightly above their initial estimate because the added monthly cost is modest when purchased at younger ages.
